Arizona Project Archaeology
We envision archaeological education as a path to civic engagement and stewardship of cultural resources on public lands.
The Arizona Site Steward Program Foundation is proud to support Arizona Project Archaeology, which provides a fully developed interdisciplinary science based Archaeological curriculum to 3rd - 5th grade history teachers. This comprehensive curriculum uses archaeological inquiry to foster an understanding of past and present cultures; improve social studies and science education; and enhance citizenship education to help preserve our archaeological legacy.
What we can do for you
We provide services to educators, students and learners of all ages in three ways:
1. High-quality curricular materials that model authentic archaeological inquiry.
2. Professional development for educators including classroom teachers, informal educators, and archaeologists.
3. Support for Project Archaeology educators through state and regional programs, conferences, new materials, and networking opportunities. How can we help you?
Teachers! Are field trips next to impossible? Working with Arizona Parks and Trails, Arizona Project Archaeology has put together nine virtual field trips to sites all over Arizona! Each video is a guided tour of the archaeological site, park or monument and features a Project Archaeology Investigating Shelter lesson topic. This interactive workshop will present archaeological inquiry-based lessons featuring an enduring understanding, essential question and assessment, with teacher tools such as background information, materials list, word bank and interactive classroom exercises. This curriculum meets many essential Arizona Education Standards. Each teacher will receive the Project Archaeology Investigating Shelter curriculum book as well as an Arizona-based Pithouse Investigation teacher and student book. (an $80 value). Workshop completion will generate completion certificate for six professional development hours.

Workshops and programs are made possible by partnerships with the Arizona Site Steward Program and Foundation, Arizona Preservation organization, Arizona State Parks, Bureau of Land Management, Arizona State University College of Integrated Sciences and Arts and grantors Arizona Humanities and the Institute of Heritage Education.
Also, Arizona Project Archaeology is proud to have received a grant from the Arizona Archaeological and Historical Society (AAHS) F. Lewis Orrell Jr Bequests to develop an Arizona specific Hohokam Pithouse Shelter guide for our teachers and students. Watch for this guide in 2023!
