Established June 5th, 1986, by Governor Bruce Babbitt, to combat the destruction of archaeological sites by including everyday Arizonians in supporting Land Manager efforts. 

Celebrating 40 Years of Excellence

  • Over 6,000 volunteers trained by the State Historic Preservation Office and Regional Coordinators

  • 550 Stewards, on average, serve annually 

  • 620,000+ hours of dedicated service supporting over 20 public land managers

  • 50 million miles patrolled by Stewards in their personal vehicles

  • 118,000 site monitoring visits conducted

  • A lifetime of dedication: Currently over 30% of Stewards have served over 10 years. 10% have served 20+ years.

  • Over 100 individuals questioned, arrested or fined thanks to Site Stewards witnessing and reporting illicit activities.

  • Over 5,000 instances of damage, vandalism and looting reported.
